Emerging risks and solar flares.
The term “Emerging Risks” appears increasingly in the risk press and it is worth understanding what this means and whether it merits your attention. The risk industry has produced an array of definitions but common-sense says it is a risk of which there is awareness, though generally not widespread, and it either hasn’t happened yet or its impact isn’t fully understood or quantifiable. It might by local or global, financial or physical.
Until recently, the banking crisis with all its consequences was an emerging risk. So, of course, was pandemic. Should we all be looking for these things? Well, if you run your business to a plan, of course you should. Striking the right balance is the secret. And should we all be worrying about solar flares? Who knows, but it would be worth looking them up on the internet and having them on your risk radar.
